How we came to be...

Leaving a Legacy 501(c)(3)

Leaving a Legacy was born when Mick Maynard and Officer David Lopez discussed how they could help the community after tragic events nationwide affected our countries law enforcements officers. David is a police tactics and use of force instructor as well as the head coach for a large police grappling team and Mick is highly respected and active in the Mixed Martial Arts Community. It was a perfect match. Together they intend to host fundraising events that will provide scholarships for law enforcement officers to train at Ambassador Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academies Nationwide.

About Mick and David

Mick is currently the VP of Talent Relations for the Ultimate Fighting Championships. He is without a doubt one of the most respected people in the MMA fight game but he is so much more than that. Mick earned his BJJ Black Belt from the one and only Renzo Gracie in 2018. David began his grappling career in 1994, training in upstate New York with Nick Sanzo. Police in Marietta Georgia are effectively using BJJ as part of Reform.

Officers are required to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it is proving to reduce injuries to both the officers and the citizens they are sworn to protect. Additionally, it is increasing mental and physical preparedness as well as supporting psychological wellness.

Police Training Reform

This is a great example of how large departments can be progressive in their approach towards improving training.
